Ina lies in the Ina Valley in southern Nagano, a long corridor between the Central Alps to the west and the Southern Alps to the east. The Tenryū River runs through the valley floor from north to south. From above the town spreads along the river and up the river terraces, and the streets follow the level ground between the slopes.
The valley is formed by rivers and fans descending from both mountain ranges. The result is a stepped landscape, where tributaries cut across the terraces and small streams feed the Tenryū. Roads and the rail line follow the valley lengthwise, so the map has a strong north–south orientation.
An Ina map poster also covers the Takato area, joined to the city in 2006, whose castle ruins are famous for their spring cherry blossoms. The park is a small green shape at the eastern edge of the town, set against the mountains of the Southern Alps.
