The river runs east to west through the city, and the medieval old town sits on its southern bank beside the crossing that gave Innsbruck its name.
The Golden Roof, a late-Gothic balcony covered with gilded copper tiles, marks the heart of the old town and was built for Emperor Maximilian I around 1500. Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, and the Bergisel ski jump, rebuilt to a design by Zaha Hadid, still overlooks the city from the south.
