Ioánnina is the capital of Epirus in northwestern Greece. It lies on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis, with the steep ridge of Mount Mitsikeli rising across the water. On a map the lake takes up a large part of the frame, and the city's streets press up against its shoreline in a dense crescent.
The old town sits inside the walls of the Kastro, a fortified promontory that reaches into the lake. It is closely linked with Ali Pasha, the Ottoman-era ruler whose seat was here in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
