The Trans-Amazonian Highway reaches the Tapajós here, with the settlement of Miritituba on the opposite bank, where grain terminals have been built in recent years. The town is also known as a centre of gold prospecting in the Tapajós basin, and Amazônia National Park protects a large area of forest nearby.
