Ivry-sur-Seine lies immediately southeast of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine, just upstream of where the Marne joins it. From above, the town is densely built and varied. Rail yards and industrial sites run alongside the river, the boulevard périphérique marks the boundary with the capital to the north, and a mix of old streets and large housing projects fills the ground that rises gently away from the water.
For much of the twentieth century Ivry was a working-class industrial town, and the architecture of its centre reflects that. The star-shaped, terraced housing complexes designed by Jean Renaudie and Renée Gailhoustet in the 1970s are among the best-known examples of French postwar urbanism. Metro line 7 and the RER C connect the town to Paris.
