Jarash, also written Jerash, lies in the hills north of Amman. The town has two very different street patterns side by side. A seasonal stream, the Wadi Jarash, runs roughly north to south through the valley. The modern town spreads over its eastern side, and the ancient city of Gerasa occupies much of the western side, enclosed within the line of its old walls.
Gerasa is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere, and its plan still shows on a modern map. The Cardo, a long colonnaded street, runs through the ruins in a straight line. At its southern end it opens into the Oval Plaza, an unusual elliptical forum surrounded by columns. Hadrian's Arch stands to the south, outside the old walls.
