Jesi sits in the Esino valley, inland from Ancona, and its historic centre stands on a long ridge above the river. The medieval walls around the old town have survived largely intact, and on a map they form a clear, elongated outline. Inside, narrow streets run lengthwise along the ridge, linking a series of squares and palaces.
The town has a notable place in history. The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II was born here in 1194, reportedly in a tent set up in the main square, and the composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was also born in Jesi. The theatre is named after him. The surrounding hills produce Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, one of the best-known white wines of central Italy.
