Jūnāgadh means old fort, and the city is still organised around one. Uparkot, an ancient citadel on raised ground on the eastern side of the old town, is a clear walled outline on the map. Below it, the old city is a tight tangle of lanes, markets and small squares. Newer, straighter roads then spread west and south across the Saurashtra plain.
East of the city, the ground rises towards Girnar, the group of volcanic peaks sacred to Jains and Hindus. A long stairway of stone steps climbs through temples to the summits.
