Kālka sits exactly where the plains of northern India give way to the Shivalik hills, on the route up into Himachal Pradesh. From above, the change is sharp. Streets are fairly regular on the lower ground to the south, then begin to twist and thin out as the land rises to the north.
The town is best known as the starting point of the Kalka–Shimla Railway. This narrow-gauge mountain line is part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage listing. On the map, its track leaves the station and immediately starts winding into the hills. Nearby, the main highway to Shimla climbs in wide curves.
