Kamina lies on the high plateau of southern DR Congo and is the capital of Haut-Lomami province. From above, the town is a spread-out network of roads and neighbourhoods, and the main railway line runs across it as its most prominent feature.
The town grew up as a junction on the railway that links the mining region of Katanga with the north and west of the country. Its tracks and station area still set the direction of many of the streets, and the town extends from them into the surrounding savannah.
