Kempten lies on the Iller River in the Allgäu, in southern Bavaria, with the Alps visible to the south. The river runs through the town from south to north, and the older districts climb the slopes above it. The Roman settlement of Cambodunum stood on the high ground on the east bank, which is why Kempten counts among the oldest cities in Germany.
For centuries the town was divided in two: a free imperial city around the old market and a separate town ruled by the prince-abbots, whose baroque Residenz and the Basilica of St. Lorenz still dominate the upper town. The map shows the two cores, now merged into a single centre.
