Khartoum stands at al-Mogran, the point where the White Nile and the Blue Nile meet and continue north as the Nile. The rivers split the wider urban area into three parts: Khartoum itself to the south, Omdurman to the west and Khartoum North, or Bahri, to the north-east. On a map the confluence is unmistakable, a Y of water with the city built into each arm.

The central streets of Khartoum were laid out at the turn of the twentieth century with diagonal avenues cutting across the grid, a plan often said to echo the Union Jack.
