Kodarma lies in northern Jharkhand, on the edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau, where forested hills rise out of farmland. The town has a compact centre, and roads lead out towards Hazaribagh, Gaya and the surrounding district. A main railway line passes through, and its station is an important stop in the area.
The region is known as India's mica belt. For much of the twentieth century, Kodarma was famous for mica mining, and it was often called the mica capital of the country. Nearby, the Tilaiya Dam on the Barakar River forms a large reservoir with an irregular shoreline winding into the hills.
