Kolda is the main town of the upper Casamance in southern Senegal. From above it is broad and low-rise, with a road grid that is regular in the centre and loosens as it moves outward into compounds and farmland. The Casamance River passes close by, here still a narrow stream far from its wide estuary near the coast.
The town is the capital of Kolda region and serves as a market and administrative centre for a largely rural area. It is closely tied to the Fula communities of the historic Fouladou area. National roads link it west toward Ziguinchor and east toward Tambacounda and the Gambian border.
