Kottagūdem lies in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district in the east of Telangana, in hilly, forested country not far from the Godavari river. It is best known as the headquarters of the Singareni Collieries Company, the long-established coal mining enterprise of the region, and much of the town's layout reflects that industrial role.

It is a string of separate clusters: an older market area, residential colonies built for mine workers and staff, and industrial sites linked by roads and a railway line.
