Koupéla is a town built around a junction. On a map the main roads are the first thing you see. The highway from Ouagadougou arrives from the west and continues east, and another major route branches south toward the Togo border. The town grew around these lines, and its streets spread out over flat, open land dotted with fields and small settlements.
Its position has made Koupéla a place where travellers and freight stop, trade and change direction, and that role is visible in the way the town stretches along the roads. Koupéla is also an important Catholic centre in Burkina Faso and the seat of an archdiocese, which gives it an influence larger than its size would suggest.
