Ksar is one of the districts of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, and it is where the city began. Before Nouakchott was chosen as the capital around independence, a small ksar, or fortified settlement, stood here. On the modern map, Ksar is a part of the regular city grid, with blocks laid out on flat, sandy ground a few kilometres inland from the Atlantic.
For decades the district was home to the city's international airport. The runway still shows on the map as a long, straight strip, one of the largest single shapes in the city, and the open land around it separates Ksar from neighbouring districts. Beyond the streets, the texture changes to sand and dunes.
