Kunoy is almost entirely mountain. High peaks run along its length and fall steeply to the fjords on either side, leaving only narrow strips of level land at the shore. On the map, its inhabited places sit on the southern edge. Haraldssund lies by the causeway to Borðoy, and a road runs from there along the coast to the village of Kunoy on the western side.
The causeway made Kunoy part of the road network of the northern islands. On the northeastern coast lies the abandoned village of Skarð. It was given up in the early twentieth century after the men of the village were lost at sea in a single boat accident. Around the village of Kunoy grows a small plantation, a rare patch of trees in a mostly treeless landscape.
