Kutaisi, in the western region of Imereti, is one of Georgia's oldest cities. Legend links it with Aia, the Colchian capital in the story of the Golden Fleece. Bagrati Cathedral, built in the early eleventh century, stands on a hill above the river. A short distance outside the city, the Gelati Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From 2012 to 2019 Kutaisi was also Georgia's legislative seat, when the parliament met in a modern building here before returning to Tbilisi.
