Laja lies on the Bolivian Altiplano in the department of La Paz, roughly between the city of El Alto and Lake Titicaca, at around 3,800 metres above sea level. The land around it is almost entirely flat and open. Fields, pastures and scattered farmsteads stretch toward distant mountain ridges, and the town forms a small, well-defined cluster in the middle.
Laja has a special place in Bolivian history. In 1548 the Spanish captain Alonso de Mendoza founded the city of Nuestra Señora de La Paz here, before the settlement was moved within days to the sheltered valley where La Paz stands today. The town keeps a colonial church on its main square.
