Lambaréné is the capital of Moyen-Ogooué province in Gabon, on the Ogooué River, the country's largest. Part of the town sits on an island in the river, with other districts on the banks either side, so from above it appears as a cluster of settlements separated and connected by water.
The town is best known for the hospital founded by Albert Schweitzer in 1913. Schweitzer, a doctor, theologian and musician, worked here for decades and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. The hospital still operates, and its historic buildings are preserved as a museum.
