Le Robert lies on the Atlantic side of Martinique, wrapped around one of the island's largest bays. On a map the coastline tells most of the story: a wide inlet partly sheltered from the open ocean and dotted with small islands, known locally as îlets, with the town gathered along the inner shore. Inside the bay the water is calm enough that the shoreline curves softly, with coves and small points instead of cliffs.
Inland, the streets climb away from the waterfront into rolling hills covered with neighbourhoods, gardens and former plantation land. Roads follow the ridges and valleys rather than a grid, so the pattern looks loose and branching, like veins running down toward the sea. Mangrove edges and the shallow sandbanks known as fonds blancs show up in the bay as pale, uneven shapes.
One of the bay's islands, Îlet Chancel, is known for its population of Lesser Antillean iguanas, and boat trips around the îlets are a familiar local pastime.
