Lephalale, known as Ellisras until 2002, lies in the far west of Limpopo, near the Botswana border. On a map it looks less like a single town and more like a group of settlements: the older centre, the planned suburb of Onverwacht and the township of Marapong, joined by long roads across flat bushveld. The Mokolo River runs through the area.
The town grew around coal. The Waterberg coalfield lies beneath the surrounding plain, and Lephalale is home to two of South Africa's largest power stations, Matimba and Medupi. Their sites, together with the mine next to them, make some of the biggest geometric shapes on the map, set against the irregular tracks of game farms and bush.
