D'Kaart
From above, Liaocheng is organised around water. At its centre a compact, nearly square old town sits on its own island inside Dongchang Lake, one of the larger urban lakes in northern China. The shoreline wraps the old quarter like a frame, and the newer city spreads out from it in wide, regular blocks across the flat plain of western Shandong.
The Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal runs through the city, and for centuries Liaocheng was a trading stop on that route. On the map the canal is a narrow, deliberate line that is easy to tell apart from the looser curves of the lake. Taken together, the canal and the lake explain the city's old nickname, the water city north of the Yangtze.
A Liaocheng map poster shows how these two kinds of water shape everything else. The old town's cross-shaped streets meet near Guangyue Tower, a Ming-era wooden tower at its heart, while boulevards on the mainland run in long straight lines to the edge of the plain. The contrast between that small enclosed core and the open grid around it is clear at any scale.

The Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal crosses the city as a thin, straight channel, a reminder that Liaocheng grew as a stop for boats carrying grain and goods between north and south.
Outside the lake, the newer districts follow a broad rectilinear layout of long avenues and large blocks, typical of cities on the flat North China Plain.

Firwat Liaocheng
Liaocheng suits someone who knows the walk around the lake or who grew up within sight of the old tower. The square island in its ring of water makes a strong, simple centre for a print, and the plain around it keeps the rest of the composition quiet.
You can add a family name, a date or a line of coordinates to the title, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download HD files for $9, or order a matte print, with a wooden frame if you like.
