Lincoln lies in Placer County, on the gently rising land between the Sacramento Valley and the Sierra Nevada foothills. The oldest part of town is a small grid of streets beside the railway, and from there the city has grown outward in large new neighbourhoods. Curving streets, cul-de-sacs and parks fill the newer districts, and open grassland and farmland surround them.
Lincoln was one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States in the early 2000s, with much of the growth in planned communities, including a large active-adult development. The city is also home to Gladding, McBean, a terracotta and clay pipe manufacturer founded in the nineteenth century that is still operating beside the old town.
