Lod lies on the central coastal plain of Israel, southeast of Tel Aviv. From above, the most striking feature is its neighbour. The long runways of Ben Gurion Airport sit immediately to the north, and railway lines converge on the town from several directions. The older centre forms a knot of irregular lanes, surrounded by later neighbourhoods laid out in wider blocks.
Known in antiquity as Lydda, the town has been inhabited for thousands of years. Tradition associates it with Saint George, whose tomb is venerated in the church that bears his name, next to the Great Mosque of Lod. Lod also became a major rail junction, and that role is still clearly visible in the tracks that cross the town.
