Long Island in the Bahamas is aptly named. It is a narrow strip of limestone that stretches across the Tropic of Cancer, often only a few kilometres wide. The east coast faces the deep Atlantic and is rocky and exposed. The west coast opens onto the shallow, pale banks of the Bahamas.
