Lowell sits where the Concord River meets the Merrimack, just below Pawtucket Falls, and water defines its map. In the early nineteenth century, investors dug a system of power canals to drive textile mills. Those channels still run through downtown, dividing the centre into islands of brick mill complexes, streets and small parks.
Lowell was one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States, and Lowell National Historical Park preserves its mill history. The city is also the birthplace of the writer Jack Kerouac, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell sits along the Merrimack. Beyond downtown, neighbourhoods spread over rolling ground in a looser, older New England pattern.
