Lublin grew on a raised spur above the Bystrzyca River, and the map still shows why the site was chosen. The Old Town is a compact oval of narrow streets on high ground. The castle hill stands just to the north-east, separated from it by a short dip. Below both, the river valley opens into meadows and parkland, a wide pale band between the historic core and the districts beyond.
West of the Old Town, beyond the Kraków Gate, Krakowskie Przedmieście runs as the main axis of the nineteenth-century city, lined by larger blocks and squares. In 1569 the Union of Lublin joined Poland and Lithuania into a single commonwealth. The castle's Holy Trinity Chapel, with its medieval Ruthenian-Byzantine frescoes, is one of the city's most distinctive sights.
Further west lies a large academic quarter. It is home to Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and other institutions, with campus buildings set in green space. To the south, the Zemborzycki Reservoir widens the Bystrzyca into a lake edged by woods.
