Luuq is a town in the Gedo region of southwestern Somalia, on the Jubba River. It is known above all for its setting: the old town occupies a peninsula formed by a sharp meander of the river, so water encloses it on most sides. This natural moat made Luuq a defensible site and helped it serve as a trading point for the surrounding region.
On a map the shape is unmistakable. The Jubba sweeps around the town in a near-circle, and the streets inside the bend form a compact, irregular grid that fills the enclosed land.
