Male Map Poster & Print
Male, the capital of the Maldives, occupies a small coral island at the southern edge of North Malé Atoll. The island is barely two kilometres long and almost entirely built up, so the city ends where the land ends. On a map the result is extraordinary: a dense block of narrow streets bounded on every side by sea walls, quays and harbour basins, with open water all around.
Male is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Space is so limited that land has been reclaimed around the island's edges over the years. The Old Friday Mosque, built from carved coral stone in the seventeenth century, stands near the centre. Since 2018 the Sinamalé Bridge has linked Male to Hulhulé, the airport island, and on to reclaimed Hulhumalé.
A Male map poster is almost a diagram of a coastline filled to the edge. Fine lanes are packed tightly together, reclaimed land has straight artificial edges, harbours are cut into the shore, and the long line of the bridge heads east across the lagoon. Few capitals look so complete in a single frame.

Harbours and sea walls
Straight quays, breakwaters and harbour basins along the waterfront shape the island's outline, giving the coast a distinctly engineered, geometric edge.
Sinamalé Bridge
The bridge crosses the channel east to Hulhulé, the airport island, a long, slender line reaching out from the city across open water.
