Manosque is the largest town in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, built on a slope above the Durance valley. Its historic centre is a clear oval of narrow streets, once walled, and now surrounded by a ring of boulevards that follows the line of the old fortifications. Two old gates, the Porte Saunerie and the Porte Soubeyran, still mark the entrances.
From above, that oval is the first thing you notice, set against newer neighbourhoods that spread down toward the valley floor and up the hills behind. To the east, the Durance runs in a broad, braided channel, with the motorway and railway following it. The hill of Mont d'Or rises just north of the old town.
The writer Jean Giono was born in Manosque and lived there most of his life, and the cosmetics company L'Occitane en Provence has its headquarters in the town. A Manosque map poster captures a Provençal town where the medieval plan is still perfectly legible from the air.
