The main town sits on the south coast, and villages are spread around the rest of the island. In antiquity the island was known as Proconnesus, and its white marble was shipped across the eastern Mediterranean for buildings in Constantinople and beyond. The Greek word for marble is the root of the island's modern name, and through it the name of the whole Sea of Marmara. Quarrying continues today.
