Midland lies on the southern edge of the Llano Estacado in West Texas, and the land around it is almost perfectly flat. The town took its name from its position midway between Fort Worth and El Paso on the Texas and Pacific Railway, and its streets follow a straight grid extended block after block as the city expanded. George W. Bush grew up in Midland, and Laura Bush was born here.
