Minakuchichō-matoba is part of Minakuchi, the central district of Kōka city in southern Shiga Prefecture. Minakuchi grew as a post station on the Tōkaidō, the historic highway between Edo and Kyoto, and the old route can still be traced on the map as a long, slightly winding street that the rest of the town gathers around.
The layout is typical of a Japanese valley town. Houses and shops line the old road and its side streets, the railway runs close by, and beyond the built-up area the map breaks into the small, regular rectangles of rice paddies.
