Minami-Sōma Map Poster & Print
Minami-Sōma stretches along the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture. It was formed in 2006 by merging Haramachi, Kashima and Odaka, and the map still shows three separate centres linked by a coastal railway and highway. Rivers run east from the Abukuma highlands to the sea, crossing flat coastal plains of rice fields.
The 2011 earthquake and tsunami hit the coast hard, and the southern part of the city, including Odaka, was later included in the evacuation zone after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. The coastline has since been rebuilt with new seawalls and embankments, and the land nearest the sea has changed as a result.
The city is known for Sōma Nomaoi, a centuries-old festival of mounted samurai. A Minami-Sōma map poster shows the long coastal plain, the rivers crossing it, the separate town centres and the hills rising inland, a record of a place that has been through a great deal and continues.
