Minning is a town in Ningxia, in north-central China, set on the irrigated plain south of Yinchuan. It was built from the late 1990s to resettle families from the dry, mountainous south of the region, with support from Fujian province. The name joins the short forms of the two provinces: Min for Fujian and Ning for Ningxia. Its story was later dramatised in a popular television series.
Because it was planned in a short time, Minning's map is unusually regular. Wide avenues divide the town into rectangular blocks of housing, and many of the blocks repeat the same internal layout. Around the edge, the grid gives way to greenhouses, vineyards and field plots. The Helan Mountains rise to the west of this plain, and the Yellow River runs to the east.
