Mixco lies on the western side of the Guatemala City metropolitan area, rising from the valley toward the mountains. Its terrain is steep and broken by deep ravines, called barrancos, which the city has grown around. As a result, the streets follow the ridges in long, twisting lines, and the ravines appear on the map as winding blank channels.
The area was settled long before the Spanish arrived, and the old town centre keeps the traditional arrangement of a church and plaza. Around it, newer residential districts and colonias spread along the ridges. Major roads link Mixco to the capital to the east, and the boundary between the two cities is hard to see in the built fabric.
