D'Kaart
Miyakonojō occupies a wide basin in south-western Miyazaki Prefecture, close to the border with Kagoshima. Mountains surround it on most sides, and the Kirishima volcanic range rises to the north-west. The basin floor is flat enough for a spread-out city. There is a denser grid around the central station, and fields, greenhouses and livestock farms fill the space between the outlying districts.
The Ōyodo River rises in Kagoshima Prefecture, flows north through the basin and then turns east toward the coast at Miyazaki. On a map it traces a curving line through Miyakonojō, with tributaries joining from the surrounding hills. The Shimazu clan, who later ruled Satsuma, took their name from a medieval estate centred on this area, so the basin has a place in the region's history.
Today the city is best known for farming, especially beef, pork and chicken, and for shochu, since one of Japan's major distillers is based here. In recent years it has also ranked at or near the top nationally for hometown tax donations. A Miyakonojō map poster shows a city defined by its bowl of land, with streets gathered on the basin floor and the mountains holding everything in place.

The river flows north through the basin before turning toward the coast. Its curving course and joining tributaries form the main natural line through Miyakonojō.
To the north-west the ground rises toward the Kirishima volcanoes. The street pattern thins out there into farmland and wooded slopes along the edge of the map.
