Modica lies in the southeast of Sicily, in the rugged limestone country of the Hyblaean plateau. On a map, its shape is set by the ravines that meet at its heart. Modica Bassa fills the valley floor, where streams once ran before being covered over after a severe flood in 1902. Modica Alta climbs the ridges above in tight bands of houses that follow the contours.
After the earthquake of 1693, Modica was rebuilt in the late Baroque style. It is one of the towns of the Val di Noto listed together by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of San Giorgio, with its great flight of steps, is its best-known building. The town is also famous for its grainy, cold-worked chocolate, made to a traditional method.
