Monrovia sits in the San Gabriel Valley, northeast of Los Angeles, directly beneath the steep front of the San Gabriel Mountains. Founded by William N. Monroe and incorporated in 1887, it grew during the Southern California land boom of the late nineteenth century, and its street plan still reflects that era of orderly, speculative town-building.
From above, the city is a tidy grid that runs north toward the mountains until the slopes stop it. Old Town, along Myrtle Avenue, forms the historic commercial spine, with the railway and the Foothill Freeway crossing the southern part of the city. At the northern edge, Monrovia Canyon Park leads into a wooded canyon with a trail to a waterfall.
