Mosul grew up on both banks of the Tigris, and the river is the axis of every map of the city. On the west bank the old city is a compact knot of narrow lanes near the water, much denser than the newer districts around it. On the east bank, wider and more regular neighbourhoods spread out toward the plain. A series of bridges links the two sides.
Across the river from the old city lies the site of ancient Nineveh, once the capital of the Assyrian Empire. Its large area of open ground stands out among the surrounding streets. Beyond it the street pattern runs out into the farmland of the Nineveh Plains, and highways lead north toward Duhok and east toward Erbil.
A Mosul map poster records a city that has been rebuilt street by street since the fighting of 2016 and 2017. The al-Nuri mosque and its leaning al-Hadba minaret, destroyed in 2017, have been rebuilt through a UNESCO-led project. The old city's lanes appear on the map as they are lived in today.
