Moulins lies on the right bank of the Allier, one of the last largely untamed rivers in France. On the map, its wide bed of shifting channels and sandbanks runs along the western edge of the town. The Régemortes bridge, an eighteenth-century stone bridge, carries the main road across it.
The town was the capital of the Bourbonnais and seat of the Dukes of Bourbon. Boulevards now follow the line of the old ramparts, drawing a clear ring around the historic core.
