Nagareyama sits in northwestern Chiba Prefecture, and the Edo River forms its western edge, separating it from Saitama. On a map that river is a long, gently curving boundary. East of it, the city mixes older low-rise districts, pockets of woodland and farmland, and planned residential areas, with no single dominant downtown.
The city has two characters. Near the river, the older town grew as a river port and became known for producing mirin, the sweet rice wine used in Japanese cooking. It was also here, in 1868, that the Shinsengumi commander Kondō Isami was taken into custody. The small Ryutetsu Nagareyama Line still runs to this part of town.
Further east, the Tsukuba Express opened in 2005 and brought new stations, wide roads and carefully planned neighbourhoods designed around families and green space.
