Nantou City is the seat of Nantou County, the only county in Taiwan without a coastline. The city sits where the western lowlands start to rise into the island's mountainous interior, and the map shows that transition plainly. There is a dense urban grid on the flatter ground, lines of rivers and irrigation channels running across it, and slopes to the east where the streets give way to contour-hugging roads.
The most distinctive part of the city is Zhongxing New Village, which was built from the 1950s as the seat of the Taiwan Provincial Government. It was laid out as a garden city, with curving avenues, generous green space and low-density housing, and it looks very different from the tighter commercial streets of the older town centre.
