Norman lies just south of Oklahoma City and shows the American land-survey grid very clearly: long straight roads a mile apart divide the land into square sections. The Canadian River curves along the western side of the city. To the east, the irregular shoreline of Lake Thunderbird breaks the pattern and gives the map its one large natural shape.
The city was founded in the Land Run of 1889 and took its name from Abner Norman, a surveyor who had worked in the area before settlement. It is best known as the home of the University of Oklahoma, whose campus lies south of downtown and shapes much of the city's life, from game days at the stadium to the shops of Campus Corner.
