Ocosingo sits in a broad valley in eastern Chiapas, where the high country around San Cristóbal de las Casas starts to drop toward the lowland forest. From above, the town is a tight cluster of rectangular blocks laid out around a central square. The streets thin out quickly at the edges and give way to farmland, scattered houses and the folds of hills that close the valley on every side.
The road between San Cristóbal and Palenque passes through town, and on a map it shows as a single line winding through the mountains before it straightens across the valley floor. Smaller roads branch off toward villages and ranches, and a few streams cross the surrounding fields. A short distance east of town lie the ruins of Toniná, a Maya city known for its tall stepped acropolis built into a hillside.
