Palu, capital of Central Sulawesi, sits at the southern end of Palu Bay, a deep inlet that reaches into the island from the Makassar Strait. The city fills the flat valley floor where the bay ends, and steep ranges rise to the east and west. On the map this creates a clear shape: a funnel of water leading to a compact urban area enclosed by high ground.
The Palu River flows north through the centre of the city and into the bay, dividing it into eastern and western halves connected by bridges. The shoreline curves around the head of the bay, and main roads run parallel to it before branching inland. Because the valley lies in a rain shadow, it is one of the driest places in Indonesia, and the land beyond the streets is open and sparse.
In September 2018 an earthquake and tsunami struck Palu, and soil liquefaction destroyed entire neighbourhoods; the city has been rebuilding since, and its map has changed as a result.
