The historic centre follows the river bank, with streets laid out on a Dutch colonial grid that runs down to the water. Near the waterfront stands Fort Zeelandia, and next to it the open green of Independence Square and the Presidential Palace.
The inner city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its white-painted wooden buildings, including the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, one of the largest wooden structures in the Americas.
