Prince Charles Island sits in the eastern part of Foxe Basin, off the west coast of Baffin Island in Nunavut. From above it reads as a wide, rounded mass with few interruptions. There are no roads or settlements, only a pale interior patterned with small lakes and a shoreline that meets shallow water rather than cliffs. The island is defined almost entirely by its outline.
What makes the island unusual is how recently it entered the map. Despite its size, it was not recorded until 1948, when a Royal Canadian Air Force survey flight spotted it over the ice-bound basin. It was named for Prince Charles, born that same year. Few landmasses of this scale were charted so late, which gives its outline an unexpected freshness.
